Berta´s Spa in Třeboň is famous for peat baths. The peat comes from bogs in the ecologically protected countryside around Třeboň. Similar peat baths have been used by Europeans to heal injured bones, joints and muscles since the days of ancient Rome. In the 19th century, a teacher named Václav Huček found that local peat had the same medicinal effect even if heated over a fire. In 1883 he opened a spa in the small town of Třeboň for his daughter Berta, who suffered from severe rheumatism.
Spa care was at the time the propriety of lords and ladies and Berta?s Spa was a center of high society. In 1941 the spa was overrun by the German military and used as a dormitory for evacuated German children. Towards the end of the Second World War the spa was turned into a barracks for Hungarian soldiers. After 1945 it again housed an invasion, this time the Soviet army. In 1948 Berta´s Spa was nationalized under the program of the new socialist government and three new parts were added to the spa - the guest house, the dormitory of the National Forest and a parcel of land called Rambouskovna.

In 1995 the Berta´s Spa were reconstructed between 1995 and 1997. It now has new pools, medical equipment, paint and trim. There is a weight-lifting complex and an inflatable domed tennis court.
