Znojmo is a medieval royal town with an exceptionally high number of extant religious buildings. Probably the best known is the Rotunda of St. Catherine containing valuable murals from the 12th century. The other notable buildings include the Gothic Parish Church of St. Nicholas with ample embellishment, the Jesuit Church of St. Michael, the Monasteries of Minorites, Dominicans and Capuchins.
The dominant of numerous profane historic buildings is the Znojmo Castle, which was rebuilt to a Baroque chateau in the 17th century. The town hall tower, Althane Palace and Ughart Palace stand high above the old-time edifices of the town center. Town inhabitants of the 15th to 17th century built a multilevel labyrinth of underground tunnels and cellars, winding under the town for as long as 26 km.
