Premonstratensian monastery at Strahov ? Prague 1 (Praha hl.m.)

Adresa:

Strahovské nádv. 1/132
Praha

The Premonstrate abbey of Strahov was founded in 1140 by Prince Vladislav II. The monastery was many times demaged and repaired. Its original romanesque walls had stayed preserved under later rebuilding and were uncovered in the fifties of the 20th century. The present baroque appearance is from the second half of the 17th and the 18th century. The abbey church of Virgin Mary Ascension (baroque, 1743 - 1752) contains since 1627 the relics of St. Norbert.

The monumental library is called The Halls of Philosophy and Theology. The library was started in the 17th century. The collection has now over 130 000 sheaves. There is the Bible in many languages, but also forbidden books (libri prohibiti). The curiosity is the oldest guest book from Prague, where we can find, among others, a record of the visit of the French Empress Marie Louise, the wife of Napoleon I., the autographs of Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton, the writers Ilja Erenburg and Jean/Paul Sartre, and the first cosmonaut in the world Yuri Gagarin.

The Memorial of National Writings and its parts, the Museum of Bohemian Literature and Literary archives, have been placed in the area of the monastery since the year 1953. The monastery has an extensive garden.
