Krakovec Castle was built in 1383 for a leading personality of the royal court, a favorite of Vencel IV. and the burggrave of Křivoklát Castle, Jíra of Roztoky. This very imposing castle is mainly known as the last place of refuge of John Huss (Jan Hus) before he left for Constance. In the 16th century the castle was modified in Renaissance style and repaired at the beginning of the later half of the 17th century.
After a fire in 1783 it was finally deserted and gradually fell into ruins. Krakovec stands on the transition to the younger chateaux to which the process of development in Bohemia would have arrived, had it not been interrupted by the outbreak of the Hussite revolution.
It represents one of the peaks of Czech castle architecture of the 14th century. A tour of inspection of the ruins of Krakovec Castle, its boldly vaulted interiors, dark cellars, the torso of magnificent chapel and exceptional architectural details will, similarly as the surrounding countryside, create a profound impression on you.
