The first evidence dates back to 1392, when a yeomanly stronghold was built. The emperor Rudolf II acquired Lány in 1589 and converted the original stronghold into a hunting-lodge. In 1681 the estate was owned by the Vadšteins and later, in 1733, by the Furstenberks, when also all the chateau was rebuilt to its present state. In 1921 the chateau was redeemed by the Czechoslovak authorities and, since then it has served as a summer residence of the Czechoslovak presidents. The first Czechoslovak president Tomas Garrigue Masaryk took a liking in Lány and often stayed there. An open to public chateau park dates back to the 18th century. In 1921-30, a famous Slovenian architect J.Plečnik participated in its extensive field-engineering project.
