There are only four four-ensemble theatres in the Czech Republic. One of them is the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň, the remaining three are located in the major cities of Moravia. Plzeň can also boast of a long tradition as regards the Czech professional theatre, ranking second only to Prague in this respect. The Plzeň theatre dates back to 1st November 1865.
At present the J. K. Tyl Theatre is one of the most significant cultural institutions not only in Plzeň, but in the whole surrounding region. Every year the theatre stages 17 - 18 premieres of plays, operas, ballets, light operas and musicals. With the exception of Mondays, there are daily performances on two permanent stages, in the Grand Theatre and the Chamber Theatre. Since autumn 1996 the drama and light opera ensembles have also staged regular performances in the Club Theatre.
