The name of Žatec first appeared in historical sources as early as in the year 1004. Written documents from later periods present Žatec as a major administrative and ecclesiastical centre. In the year 1265 King Přemysl Otakar II granted important privileges to the town, which began to thrive on crafts, agriculture and trade. Still later the town won fame as the focal point of hop growing. Accorded the status of urban monument reserve in the year 1961, Žatec's historical centre, consisting of a host of remarkable buildings, is a showcase of architectural styles ranging from the Romanesque style to the Art Nouveau.
