Preserved landscape area of Železné hory (Iron mountains) has been prepared for its declaration since 1979. The preserved landscape area of Železné hory is 284 square kilometres large, i.e. about one third of the whole area of the Železné hory. In the area there exist 30 specially declared areas and trees and others have been preparing for their declaration. The whole area is divided into 4 zones demarcated with regard to natural values.

The Železné hory Mts. are interwoven by a network of marked routes for tourists. Large part of the protected landscape area can be found on the map of the Žďárské vrchy Hills.
