Cistercian monastery Osek (Teplicko)

Adresa:

Rooseveltova 1
417 05 Osek

The Cistercian monastery in Osek is situated near Litvínov and Duchcov at the foot of Ore Mountains (Krušné hory). It is a monumental work of Cistercian architecture in the Czech Republic. At present - after an unfavourable time period - thanks to Abbot Bernhard it is prospering again.

The monastic order was founded out of the first European Benedictine order with the reform of monastic rules which, between the years 1098-1113, was initiated by St. Robert of Molesme and continued by St. Bernard at the Burgundy monastery in Citeaux (in Latin "Cistercium"). In 1192 the magnate Milhost called the monks from Waldsassen to Mašťov near Kadaň. It was not until the 20th of June 1196 that the Czech prince and bishop Jindřich Břetislav confirmed Milhost's foundation in writing, the date considered to signify the first existence of the monastery. After property disputes with Milhost the monks soon left their original settlement.

Life at the monastery was disrupted several times over the last eight hundred years: first by the Hussite wars; during the years 1580 - 1628 the monastery was closed and inhabited only by the provost in the services of the Prague Archbishopric. In the years 1945-1946 the German Cistercians were relocated to the abbey at Reitenhaslach and in 1961 to Langwaden in the Rhineland. Later the Osek monastery was inhabited by the Silesians. During the period 1950-53 the buildings served as a detention camp for priests, then to 1990 for nuns. The Cistercian monks returned in 1991.
The Osek Abbot now stands at the head of the Marian Congregation which unites eight monasteries, of which four are located in Germany, one in Denmark and three in Czech Lands (Osek, Vyšší Brod and Předklášteří near Tišnov).
