The Pearl of the Renaissance style, Czech Bethlehem, the Gate to the Eagle Mountains - these all are appellations, which have been invented for Nové Město nad Metují. The foundation stone for the town was laid in the year 1501 by Jan Černčický of Kácov and he certainly made a good choice. Nové Město nad Metují perches on a rocky headland surrounded on three sides by the river Metuje. The town owes its Renaissance Square, which features houses with beautiful gables and arcades, to the Pernštejn family.

The area boasts a number of attractions, including a chateau, a small early Gothic church in Krčín, a wooden church in Slavoňov and a large town museum with a newly renovated art gallery and the Zázvorka observation tower.
