Pardubice is a town with a history reaching back to the 13th century. In the early 16th century, the powerful Pernštejn family rebuilt it into their residential town. Originally a Gothic town with two-storey houses featuring attic gables, niches and figural paintings, Pardubice was later remodelled in the Renaissance style. Elements of the two styles have survived to this day and can be seen on a number of buildings in the historical part of the town, an extraordinary urban reserve. Other landmarks include a Marian column dating from the year 1695.
The newly renovated Renaissance chateau - originally a castle surrounded by a huge earthen mound, a wall at its foot and a wide moat, a marvel of fortification system - is a jewel of European importance. A magnificent building, which once housed the Winternitz Mills, represents the town?s modern architecture.
Pardubice is also an important cultural centre with a unique Art Nouveau theatre, which has served the Thalia since the year 1909. On the international scale, Pardubice is renowned as the venue of the most demanding horse race in continental Europe - the Grand Pardubice Steeplechase.
