In the house no. 4 on Palacký Square the first sugar refinery in Moravia was established and the first sugar cube in the world was produced. In that time sugar was made as loafs or cones but it was awkward. So the director of the refinery, J. K. Rad, invented the sugar cube and the machine for its production. The first cubes of sugar were produced in Dačice in 1841. The director gave it to his wife as a gift. Since 1843 the sugar cube was produced for the market and it appeared for the first time in Vienna.
