National Park Bohemian Switzerland and Protected Area Elbe´s Sandstones (Děčín a České Švýcarsko)

Adresa:

Hřensko

Česko-saské Švýcarsko (Czech-Saxon Switzerland) is one of the most renowned traditional tourist destinations in Central Europe. This national park includes the most valuable part of Labské pískovce (Elbe Sandstones), Jetřichovické stěny (Jetřichovice Walls) and the border area of Děčínské stěny (Děčín Walls). Its area is about 79 square kilometres.

To the south and the northeast, the Labské Pískovce Protected Landscape Area encloses the national park, whereas to the east the Lužické hory (Lusatian Mountains) Protected Landscape Area lies adjacent to the park. The park also links to the Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland) National Park in Germany across the border.

The most visited national attractions are: The Pravčická brána (Pravčická Gate) national natural monument - a unique stone bridge, the Tichá and Divoká Gorges of the small river Kamenice, the Jetřichovické Rocks, small rock castles (for example, Šaunštejn, Falkenštejn), the Kyjovské Valley, which passes on to the gorge of the small River Křinice, the Růžák Hill (619 metres above sea level), in which virgin forest style ecosystems can be found.

Main Tourist Centre of this area is Mezná, an administrative part of Hřensko and the only village to be found in the national park, with valuable examples of folk architecture (a cottage featuring a supporting wooden arcade).

Canyon Elbe between town Děčín and border village Hřensko represents unique natural formation. Area is made up mostly from cretaceous secondary sedimentary rocks. Later volcanic activity broke even 1 km stout sandstone table by system of shifts. Then the landscape was modeled by various erosive powers. To the basic shapes of terrain belong valleys with forms of gorges and canyons with sandstone towers and massifs. There are many unique species of the plants and animals on the territory.
