Black Tower is 72 meters tall building ? it is a dominant of the city. It was built in the 16th century when the city council of České Budějovice accepted the decision to build a tower to serve for the representation of the city and also as a guard-tower. The building of the tower started in 1550.

The present name Black Tower is used since the 19th century and it was inspired by the color of stone surface. In the end of the 20th century the tower was repaired and a visitors' entrance was built. The upper balcony offers a nice view of the city and surrounding landscape.
