The complex of underground tunnels in Tábor is a very popular sight. It has its origin in the 15th century when people started digging cellars under their houses. They used them for storing food and especially beer. Later the cellars were extended and many of them were connected into an underground labyrinth. In case of fire or attack by enemies they were also used as a shelter. An 800 meters long tunnel system under Žižka Square was opened to the public after the Second World War. The enter of the underground tunnels is in the Hussite Museum.
