A remarkable baroque military fortress founded by Emperor Joseph II in 1780, which had no chance to prove its ability to resist an enemy (except for political prisoners and prisoners of war, for whom it proved to be a strong prison). Its massive fortifications were designed in the shape of bastion octagon. The underground tunnels with total length of 45 kilometers are unique to Europe. Inside the fortress, the town of Josefov with the Church of the Virgin Mary Assumption (with steeple reaching to 60 meters), town hall, hospital, barracks and other facilities was built in the Classicism and Empire styles.
